perhaps arrogantly, advised me that his band “could outswing Goodman or Count Basie if we wanted to.” He declared his musicians were as skilled as with any of the immensely popular “swing” bands. But Sammy prefer¬ red his unsophisticated, vanillaish style and would notvaryitregardless ofthe of thejump bands at box-office, and on records.
For many years it was billed as “The Best Dixieland Band in the Land.” Bob Crosby’s memorable orchestra kicked off its first tune in 1935. It was disbanded in 1942 because of World War II. It was reorganized 10 years later, in 1952 with most of its original members back in their chairs. And that is the group heard on this attractive disk.
