I occupied my terrible vigil with grotesque conjectures of what alterations cave life might have wrought in the physical structure of the beast, remembering the awful appearances ascribed by local tradition to the consumptives who had died after long residence in the cavern.

*The Beast in the Cave* Review. So I’ve adored the short story The Beast in the Cave since I first read it years ago. Recently, I found out Lovecraft was 14 when he finished the final draft in 1905 (it was not, however, published until 1918). Even at that young of an age, Lovecraft knew horror.
