Born in Vienna, Anna Mahler was the second child of the composer Gustav Mahler and his wife Alma Schindler. They nicknamed her 'Gucki' on account of her big blue eyes ( gucken is German for 'peek' or 'peep'). Her childhood was spent in the shadow of her mother’s love affairs and famous salon.

Anna Mahler (1904 – 1988), daughter of Gustav and Alma, began her career as a painter tutored by Giorgio de Chirico in Rome. Under the encouragement of Fritz Wotruba, a great friend, she found her medium sculpting stone, abstract imaginations of the human figure.
