William du Pont (August 21, 1855 – January 20, 1928) was a member of the Delaware Du Pont family. He was the youngest son of General Henry du Pont (1812-1889) and Louisa Gerhard du Pont (1816-1900). [1]

William du Pont Jr. (February 11, 1896 – December 31, 1965) was an English-born American businessman and banker, and a prominent figure in the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing. He developed and designed more than 20 racing venues, including Fair Hill at his 5,000-acre estate in Maryland.
William du Pont Sr. employed his secretary William King Lennig as his agent to purchase Montpelier in 1900. The property was formally transferred to du Pont in January 1901. The du Ponts, who were then living at Binfield Park outside London, relied on Lennig to organize the initial changes and enlargements to the house.

The Early Years. William du Pont, Jr. was born on February 11, 1896, in Losely Park, England, to William du Pont and Annie Rogers Zinn. He lived in England with his parents until the family moved back to the United States in 1902. From childhood, William du Pont, Jr. and his sister Marion enjoyed riding horses and raising champion fox hounds.
