The opening half hour of The Beast Must Die seems to actively belie its noir nature. A monstrous patriarch is killed mid-rant, and suddenly we’re in the mist of a whodunnit as an inspector questions those present until secrets upon secrets are exposed.

Based on a popular novel by Nicholas Blake, a pseudonym of UK Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, father of fêted actor Daniel Day-Lewis, Román Viñoly Barreto’s La bestia debe morir (US: The Beast Must Die) is a prime example of Argentinian noir and stars revered Argentinian actor Narciso Ibáñez Menta, who also co-wrote the script.
The Beast Must Die is an Argentinian film noir from 1952. And the first 20 minutes, where the patriarch of a family is murdered and everyone is a suspect, felt much less like an American cool film noir, and more like a telenovela.
