  5. Francis Knollys, who entered the service of Henry VIII before 1540, became a member of parliament in 1542 and was knighted in 1547 while serving with the English army in Scotland. He became custodian of Wallingford Castle in 1551.

  6. Knollys first entered Parliament on his fathers interest as high steward of Oxford, at a by-election caused by the death of his elder brother Edward in Ireland; he continued to represent the borough until his father’s resignation from the stewardship in 1592.

  7. In January 1643 a contemporary described him as ‘old’ Sir Francis Knollys, ‘the ancientest Parliament man in England’. He made his will when in his mid-nineties in December 1646 and it was proved in May 1648.
