The album went to number 20 on the Billboard 200 and also heralded a return to the pop charts, when the uptempo, keyboard-heavy title track, “Headed for the Future” reached #53 (also cracking the top 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart).

Having stumbled with Primitive, Diamond attempted, with Headed for the Future, to re-establish himself as a contemporary artist, co-writing with Stevie Wonder, recording songs by Bryan Adams and Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, and employing nine producers and nine recording studios.
