Born as the son of the veteran jazz drummer, the Bird Award winner 'Sir' Pierre Courbois and art teacher Wendelina Courbois-Dam. '76 Barend started to play the bassguitar (he also played the drums, Indian tabla's and the Scottish bag pipes at that time).
