In 1667, the important Evangelical Lutheran College of Eperjes was established by Lutherans in the town. Imre Thököly, the Protestant Hungarian rebel and Ottoman ally studied at the Protestant college here. In 1685 he was defeated here by the Habsburg at the Battle of Eperjes.

The representatives of the Lutherans of the Kingdom of Hungary, nobles, priests and emissaries of the free royal towns assembled in Kassa in 1665. They decided to establish a Lutheran college and nearly 100,000 gold was contributed. On October 18, 1667 the college was opened.

Eperjes was once called Athens on the Tarca River because of its high quality education, which began in 1665, when the Lutheran college was founded from the contributions of the Lutherans of Hungary. The school focused on the education of natural sciences and of the mother tongue, the Hungarian.
The beginning of higher education in Prešov is associated with the Lutheran College of Prešov, which showed interested in Kantian philosophy already in late 18th century. This is also reflected in the book Elements of Philosophical Ethics, written by the rector of the College, Andrej Vandrák.
