Staunton Military Academy was a private all-male military school located in Staunton, Virginia. Founded in 1884, the academy closed in 1976.
Established in 1884 in Staunton, VA, by Captain William H. Kable, Staunton Military Academy (SMA) served the young men of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the world for nearly 100 years. From its humble beginning with 75 cadets, enrollment grew to almost 700 in the early 1960s.
The Staunton Military Academy History Project commenced in 2007 to document the true events surrounding the founding of the Academy in 1884, the pertinent events that occurred during the life of the Academy, and finally to document the events surrounding the demise and final closure of the Academy.
The SMA History Project has collected 52 of the 70 published SMA yearbooks over the years. The final plan for them is to be donated to the Library of Virginia so that the history of the school will be in three places including the SMA Museum and the SMA History website. Without both of these groups of devoted people, there would have been no Staunton Military Academy. Because the employment records of the school have been long lost, the exact number of people that served in the faculty and staff at the school may never be known.
