Uomo politico inglese (Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, 1859 - Londra 1925). Sottosegretario per l'India (1891-92), dal 1895 al 1898 sottosegretario agli Esteri, nominato (1898) viceré dell'India, vi giunse subito dopo la rivolta delle tribù della frontiera nordoccidentale, e compì grandi riforme amministrative.
