Albert George Hibbler (August 16, 1915 – April 24, 2001) was an American baritone vocalist, who sang with Duke Ellington 's orchestra before having several pop hits as a solo artist. Some of Hibbler's singing is classified as rhythm and blues, but he is best seen as a bridge between R&B and traditional pop music. [1]
Ellington Uptown (also released as Hi-Fi Ellington Uptown) is an album by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington, recorded for the Columbia label in 1951 and 1952. It is not one of Ellington’s stronger compositions, with a vapid vocal by Al Hibbler in the opening I Like the Sunrise and five movements conveying through African rhythms the spirit of Liberia, a country founded by slaves.
