Gibbons left in 1989, with Mark Haley taking his place beginning with the tour in support of UK Jive. Haley remained a touring member, with the 1993 album Phobia recorded as a four-piece. After a European tour, Haley resigned from the Kinks in July 1993, with Gibbons returning to take his place for US dates two weeks later.

Mark Haley. Keyboards, Vocals. Mark Haley was born in Portsmouth, England into a musical family and learnt classical piano at the age of 5. He swiftly discovered Top Of The Pops and recalls watching the Kinks performing Apeman.

Mark Wayne Hateley (born 7 November 1961) is an English former professional footballer who played as a striker. He started his career with Coventry City in the First Division of English football. A spell followed at English Second Division club Portsmouth, where he ended the 1983–84 season as the club's top goalscorer.
