- Our Mission
SFS was established by Edmund A. Walsh with the goal of preparing Americans for various international professions in the wake of expanding U.S. involvement in world affairs after World War I. Today, the school hosts a student body of approximately 2,250 from over 100 nations each year.
Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service conferred the first graduate degree in international affairs in 1922, pre-dating the U.S. State Department’s adoption of the term “foreign service.”. Since then, more than 4,000 students have completed the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) degree.
The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service was founded in 1919 as the first school of international affairs in the United States. It offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs in Washington, D.C., and through Georgetown's campus in Doha, Qatar.
