Stan Kenton. Stanley Newcomb Kenton (December 15, 1911 – August 25, 1979) was an American popular music and jazz artist. As a pianist, composer, arranger and band leader, he led an innovative and influential jazz orchestra for almost four decades.

In her earliest recordings, Anita O'Day was the featured vocalist with the big bands of Gene Krupa (1941-1942 and 1945-1946) and Stan Kenton (1944). In the 1940s, Columbia and Capitol Records released the recordings of Krupa and Kenton, respectively, on 78 rpm disks with one song per side.

None of the young musicians was working regularly and so, even in the beginning, Stan Kenton was able to offer an opportunity to players who had no place to play. The situation has been repeated and magnified over the years, not only in Stan's own expanding orchestra, but also via his influence in popularising jazz and creating an audience for other players.
