The Cold Vein is the debut studio album by American hip hop duo Cannibal Ox. It was produced by El-P and released on his Definitive Jux label on May 15, 2001. The album has since been reissued by iHipHop Distribution.

El-P produced early records from the label, including Cannibal Ox's critically acclaimed The Cold Vein and his own debut solo album, Fantastic Damage. El-P released his second solo album, I'll Sleep When You're Dead , in 2007.

Synths swirl and layers of effects create a blanket of sonic emotion, whilst the drums rap out crisp and Vadim-like rhythms that hover on the boundaries of experimental electronica.

The emcees hit you with quotable after quotable and El-P gets your heart racing by pulling you into the icey world called The Cold Vein. At 75 minutes it might be a long album, but as soon as it stops playing I want to hear it again.

This is the album of 2001 and should define El-P‘s Def Jux movement. It's some of the most mature yet innovative and cutting edge hip-hop you'll hear this year. To their immense credit, Cannibal Ox and El P have assembled one of the most listenable hip-hop albums in far too long.
