Alliterating on a ‘w’ is almost like a sigh from the watchman, alone on his rooftop. It is a soft sound, elegiac in mood; the watchman hankers for the old order of his male ‘clanchiefs’. Let us assume that Harrison read Alexander’s version of the two great Anglo-Saxon elegies.
His first collection of poems, The Loiners (1970), was awarded the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize in 1972, and his acclaimed version of Aeschylus's The Oresteia (1981) won him the first European Poetry Translation Prize in 1983.
