The bogeyman (/ ˈ b oʊ ɡ i m æ n /; also spelled or known as bogyman, bogy, bogey, and, in North American English, also boogeyman) is a mythical creature used by adults to frighten children into good behaviour.
Bogeyman, any of a variety of fictional and oftentimes folkloric monsters described in stories designed to frighten children. Tales of the bogeyman and various analogues have been used for centuries all across the world to influence children to behave as their parents command and to exercise.

The Bogeyman is most easily divided into three categories; the kind that punishes misbehaved children, the kind that are more violence prone, and the kind that protect the innocent. They all relate to each other in the same way, being that they all exist to teach young children lessons.
The Bogeyman is a mythical devil that punishes children for misbehavior. This creature exists in the cultures of most European countries. Its undefined appearance make him more terrifying. In Germany he is known as Schwarze Mann (Black Man). He lives under the children bed, in the night forest and in the wardrobe.
