The Planets, Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1917. In the last movement the orchestra is joined by a wordless female chorus. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its supposed astrological character.

Unlike his friend Vaughan Williams, Holst shied away from the symphony, but the astrological attributes of the planets of the solar system (excluding Earth, and Pluto, which had not then been discovered) suggested to him a series of pieces in contrasting moods and tempi.
Holst first recorded The Planets with the London Symphony in the acoustic process, in which sound was gathered in a horn directly coupled to the cutting stylus.
6 gen 2006 · Although neither composer could claim to be a natural born conductor, these landmark recordings of Holst's 'The Planets' and Vaughan Williams's 'Symphony No. 4' offer undimmed and thrilling recorded testaments. Holst's way with 'The Planets' is notably direct and swift of tempo.
