En folkefiende hadde urpremière på Christiania Theater 13. januar 1883 i regi av Johannes Brun og med Arnoldus Reimers som dr. Stockmann. Trøndelag Teater satte opp en versjon i 2010 med Anders Mordal i hovedrollen, en rolle han forøvrig mottok Heddaprisen for.
Denne motstanden gjorde at Ibsen allerede året etter hadde klart En folkefiende om doktor Stockmann – en glad samfunnsreformator som blir forsøkt presset i kne av sine politiske motstandere og av det som den evig måteholdne boktrykker Aslaksen kaller den «kompakte majoritet».

Dr. Thomas Stockmann is the medical officer of a recently opened spa in a small town. The play begins with a dinner party hosted by Dr. Stockmann and his wife, Katrine. The dinner guests include Dr. Stockmann's brother Peter (the mayor) and Hovstad (the editor of the newspaper).
Dr. Stockmann represents the extreme idealist who has no concept of the practical side of life. His idealism blinds him to the common procedures of everyday activity. As an idealist, Dr. Stockmann believes strongly in individual freedom and the right of every man to express himself freely.
