An R&B/soul group of the 1950s, The Channels formed in 1955 around the singers Larry Hampden, Billy Morris, and Edward Dolphin, "Joe"(Bass) and "Rico"(Lead). But soon after Joe and Rico Departed, with Earl Michael Lewis and Clifton Wright formerly of The Lotharios replacing them. Lewis was the group's main songwriter.

When two member of the Channels left, bass singer Clifton Wright and Earl Michael Lewis of the Lotharios were recruited by the remaining Channels.

When two member of the Channels left, bass singer Clifton Wright and Earl Michael Lewis of the Lotharios were recruited by the remaining Channels. The following became the Classic Channel lineup: Earl Lewis, Clifton Wright, Edward Doulphin, Billy Morris and Larry Hampden.
They performed with two other part time group performers, before adding Earl Michael Lewis and Clifton Wright (previously part of The Lotharios) on a more permanent basis. Earl Lewis began writing much of the group’s material, penning ‘The Closer You Are b/w 'Now You Know'’ in 1959.
