Robert Whitehead (3 January 1823 – 14 November 1905) was an English engineer who was most famous for developing the first effective self-propelled naval torpedo . Early life. He was born in Bolton, England, the son of James Whitehead, a cotton-bleacher, and his wife Ellen Whitehead née Swift.

The British engineer Robert Whitehead developed the self-propelled underwater explosive device from earlier inventions by the American Robert Fulton and the Italian Giovanni de Lupis. Whitehead operated across Europe. He was born in Bolton in northern England and studied at the Manchester Mechanics Institute.
