Lothair the Lame (French: Lothaire le Boiteux, c. 848 – 865) was a French prince, the third son and fourth child of Charles the Bald and Ermentrude of Orléans. As he was born disabled, his parents sent him away to a monastery early in life. In 861, he became a monk.

Lothair I (Dutch and Medieval Latin: Lotharius; German: Lothar; French: Lothaire; Italian: Lotario; 795 – 29 September 855) was a 9th-century Carolingian emperor (817–855, with his father until 840) and king of Italy (818–855) and Middle Francia (843–855).
In 865 Carloman's older brother and fellow ecclesiastic, Lothair the Lame, died and Carloman succeeded him in the abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre. The next year (866), another brother, Charles the Child, whom Charles the Bald had made King of Aquitaine, died.
