22 ago 2008 · The painting,The Comtesse d’Egmont Pignatelli in Spanish Costume, portrays one of the eighteenth century’s most glamorous socialites, Septimanie du Plessis de Richelieu (1740 – 73), the only daughter of Armand du Plessis, Duc de Richelieu (1696 – 1788), a close friend of King Louis XV.
Septimanie d’Egmont was a known salonist, who was in contact with Voltaire, Rousseau, and the Swedish king Gustav III, and invited them over to the château de Braine. In May 1771, Rousseau had a recitation from his forthright autobiographical work Confessions for the Egmonts and a few select friends in Braine.
The comtesse Septimanie d’Egmont Pignatelli (1740–73), depicted here at age twenty-three, was the Jackie Kennedy of Parisian high society in the 1760s. Her father was a trusted adviser to King Louis XV. At fifteen, she married Casimir Pignatelli, comte d’Egmont, descended from ancient nobility of the Netherlands and of Naples and Aragon.
