Umrao Jaan is a 1981 Indian period musical drama film directed by Muzaffar Ali and starring Rekha as the eponymous character. Based on the 1905 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada, the film tells the story of a Lucknow tawaif and poet, and her rise to fame.

In Faizabad, British India, Dilawar is sentenced to several years in prison after Amiran's Daroga dad testifies against him. After his discharge around 1840, he extracts his vengeance by abducting Amiran and selling to a brothel madam. It is here Amiran will be re-named Umrao Jaan.

Umrao Jaan is a typical Indian story of love, heartache and family values.
"Umrao Jaan" unveils the injustices faced by women and advocates their emancipation. Set in late 19th-century India, the film tells the story of Umrao Jaan, a courtesan and poetess who was kidnapped as a child and sold into the country's prevalent culture of courtesanship.
Amiran is sold to a brothel by a corrupt cop after her father testifies against him. Many years later, she grows up to be an accomplished poetess and a renowned courtesan, Umrao Jaan.
