"Ben Franklin's Song" is the first song in Hamildrops and was released on December 15, 2017. It was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and The Decemberists and performed by The Decemberists.

    [VERSE 1]

Electricity! Yeah, you can all thank me

Took some lightning, a kite, and a fat brass key

And they're putting up streetlights in Gay Paris

You’re welcome from our young nation

I’m the only American the French wanna see

•The song is set in 1782, as he says "I am 76" in the second chorus and Benjamin Franklin was born in 1706.

•The first group of lines referencing Franklin invented harnessed electricity is referenced in "Satisfied"

"It's Ben Franklin with a key and a kite, you see it, right?"

    — Angelica Schuyler, "Satisfied"

•Since Miranda couldn't include this song the musical, he provided the lyrics to Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, telling Meloy "he'd imagined the songs being Decemberist-y". When they agreed decided to cover it, they added their own lyrics & sound and LMM added a bridge.

•The song is a boast from the point of view of Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers who was never personified in Hamilton. Franklin was initially supposed to be a character for Hamilton but never made it into the show.
