Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School was a state-operated school for the blind. It was replaced by the Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Vinton, Iowa, hosted the school and continued as host of the state agency that replaced it until 2020.

4 apr 2023 · Iowa History Daily: On April 4, 1853 the Iowa Asylum for the Blind (more recently the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School; former Vinton Institution for the Instruction of the Blind), opened in Iowa City under the direction of founder Samuel Bacon.
Since there was no school for the blind in South Dakota, the decision was made to send Mary to the school in Iowa, which was referred to them by a traveling missionary. Making a living was a constant struggle for the Ingalls family; money was scarce due to crop failures and illnesses.
The Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School (IBSSS) was founded by Samuel Bacon in 1852 as a private school in Keokuk, Iowa. Within a year, it was established by the State Legislature and relocated in Iowa City.
