After a short hiatus, the band returned with a new lineup. The bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield joined Primal Scream after break-up of his previous band, The Stone Roses and Paul Mulreany was added as their new drummer. In July 1997, Primal Scream released their fifth album, Vanishing Point.
The Aeroplanes had just finished a long tour with compadres The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy, whose drummer Paul Mulreany had, serendipitously, remained in LA. GL: “Paul had watched our set pretty much every night; his girlfriend was from LA; and he’d been hanging out with Rod and Alex too anyway.
It was the band's first album to feature Gary 'Mani' Mounfield on bass, formerly of the Stone Roses, although Marco Nelson played bass on "Burning Wheel", "Star", "If They Move, Kill 'Em'", and "Stuka". Other guest appearances on Vanishing Point include Augustus Pablo, Glen Matlock, and the Memphis Horns.
