Amreeka is a 2009 independent film written and directed by first-time director Cherien Dabis. It stars Nisreen Faour, Melkar Muallem, Hiam Abbass, Alia Shawkat, Yussuf Abu-Warda, Joseph Ziegler, and Miriam Smith. Amreeka documents the lives of a Palestinian American family in both the West Bank and Post-9/11 suburban Chicago.
When a Palestinian single mom and her teenage son immigrate to small-town Illinois during the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, they face racism, discrimination and unemployment in their adopted homeland. Winner of the FIPRESCI Critics Prize at Cannes in 2009 and voted one of the top ten independent films of the year by the National Board of Review.
