Tracks 13-20 find her again supported by Lovie Austin's Blues Serenaders, now expanded to a quartet by the addition of alto saxophonist Charles Harris. The extra take of Lovie Austin's 'Ya-Da-Do' is a real treat, for this is one of the jazziest tunes that Ma Rainey ever took on.

While still working for Paramount, she also recorded for Harmograph Records under the pseudonym May Alix. Hunter wrote "Downhearted Blues" with Lovie Austin and recorded the track for Ink Williams at Paramount Records. She received only $368 in royalties.
Her first recording was made in 1923. In the following five years, she made over 100 recordings, including "Bo-Weevil Blues" (1923), "Moonshine Blues" (1923), "See See Rider Blues" (1925), the blues standard "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom " (1927), and "Soon This Morning" (1927). [6]
