Grey College was founded in 1959 and is one of 17 Colleges of Durham University. We are situated right next to the main Mountjoy Site in a beautiful landscaped setting. Grey has just over 1,200 undergraduate students and a further 150 students who are studying for a postgraduate degree.

Grey College is a college of Durham University in England, founded in 1959 as part of the university's expansion of its student population. The college was originally planned to be named Oliver Cromwell College, but this proved too controversial.

History of Grey College. Building a family for students. Grey College was founded in 1959 as part of the University’s drive to expand its student population which in 1951 stood at 1,150 (compared to 19,500 in 2019-20). Syd Holgate, the then Secretary of Durham Colleges, was employed to be the new Master.
Grey College. Grey College has vast experience of hosting a wide variety of residential conferences, banquets and day events, and is the perfect venue to ensure that your event is a unique and memorable experience. The College facilities include the purpose-built Holgate House, a combined residential and conference centre.
