Attore (Niagara Falls, New York, 1905 - New York 1968); compiuti gli studî alla Cornell University, nel 1927 esordì in teatro, recitando nel 1928-29 con Katherine Cornell, dal 1929 al Theatre Guild di New York e dal 1931 col Group Theatre. Nel 1932 cominciò a lavorare nel cinema.
