Primogenito di Maurice, nella sua lunga carriera cinematografica (45 anni e circa 250 film) fu soprattutto un ottimo caratterista, ma ricevette un Oscar per uno dei suoi rari ruoli da protagonista, nel film A free soul (Io amo, 1931).
