Somerset House is a large Neoclassical complex situated on the south side of the Strand in central London, overlooking the River Thames, just east of Waterloo Bridge. The Georgian era quadrangle was built on the site of a Tudor palace ("Old Somerset House") originally belonging to the Duke of Somerset.
Somerset House è un edificio situato sul lato sud dello Strand a Central London, Inghilterra, affacciato sul Tamigi, ad est di Waterloo Bridge. L'edificio principale, di stile neoclassico, venne progettato dall'architetto Sir William Chambers e fu realizzato tra il 1776 ed il 1796.
Plan your visit. Somerset House is fully open to the public. Admission to Somerset House is free, but you’ll need to buy a ticket for some exhibitions and events. Part of the Strand outside Somerset House is now a pedestrian/cycle zone.

Centro culturale sulla riva nord del Tamigi, la Somerset House ospita due importanti collezioni. Il Courtauld Institute of Art custodisce opere di maestri del passato, di pittori impressionisti e post-impressionisti; le Embankment Galleries ospitano a rotazione mostre dedicate all’arte, al design, alla moda, all’architettura e alla fotografia.
La Somerset House è stata realizzata tra il 1776 e il 1796 su progetto dell’ architetto Sir William Chambers per ospitare circoli culturali e uffici governativi. A suo malincuore dovette abbattere un antico palazzo storico ormai in rovina.
