Musicista, nato nel 1731 a Mannheim dal flautista Martin Friedrich, morto il 22 febbraio 1798 a Francoforte. Studiò con Johann Stamitz verso il 1744, poi, in Italia, con Niccolò Iommelli. Nel 1757 il C. succedeva allo Stamitz come maestro concertatore e direttore della camera musicale della corte. Nel 1773 allestì l'esecuzione di opere italiane.
