Plot. Acting Lieutenant Horatio Hornblower captures the French ship Le Reve. On HMS Indefatigable, Captain Pellew orders Hornblower to sail his prize to Portsmouth with extremely important dispatches, and to destroy them if necessary to keep them out of enemy hands.

Summaries. Lt. Hornblower and his crew are captured by the enemy while escorting a Duchess who has secrets of her own.
