Thames Film. A good friend of mine alerted me to a screening of Raban's film at the Close Up Cinema in May '17. I remember it being a rather rainy evening, the small foyer densely packed in anticipation with people in damp raincoats, and the cinema occupied to the last seat.
‘Raban’s reflective, ambivalent approach to cinematic Modernism reaches its apogee in Thames Film (1986)…Narrated by John Hurt, it is the closest Raban comes to a conventional documentary, incorporating archive film from 1921-1951, panoramic photographs taken in 1937.
This movie is an experimental documentary following the flow of the Thames out of London to the sea. It has a narration from John Hurt that takes the form of reading old manuscripts, books and news articles, and also a posthumous narration from poet TS Eliot reading from his own work, The Dry Salvages from the Four Quartets.
