24 nov 2011 · Liberia '77 is well made, poignant without being depressing and captures the strength and humour of the Liberian people. It explores how photography has become part of cultural identity and how the people of Liberia rebuilt their lives after two devastating civil wars.
At the height of the conflicts, everyday Africans were forced to destroy their photographs or face death, leaving millions of people with only memories of their former lives or deceased loved ones. Incredibly, the Topham family had moved just in time to avoid the atrocities that befell Liberia.
