The Chosen (Spanish: El elegido) is a 2016 Spanish-Mexican thriller drama film written and directed by Antonio Chavarrías. The film stars Hannah Murray, Alfonso Herrera, Julian Sands and Henry Goodman. The movie was filmed in Coyoacán, Mexico and Barcelona, Spain, and its release was scheduled for the first part of 2016.
Ramón Mercader, a young communist combatant, is recruited and trained by the Soviet intelligence service to participate in a top secret mission ordered by the ruthless dictator Joseph Stalin: the assassination of his former political rival, Leon Trotsky, who is living in exile in Mexico.

It's 1937 and Ramon Mercador is a young officer fighting Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War. His mother, Caridad del Rio, is an undercover agent for the GPU (Soviet Secret Service). She recruits Ramon as one of the participants in an important undercover mission to kill Trotsky.
Tras prepararse en Rusia, Ramón deja su vida y viaja a París bajo una nueva identidad, la de un belga adinerado llamado Jacques Mornard. Allí conoce a Sylvia, una joven trotskista, quien no tardará en ser seducida por Jacques. En 1940 se reencuentran en México, país en el que Trotsky vive exiliado.
