John Edmund Andrew Phillips (August 30, 1935 – March 18, 2001) [1] was an American folk rock musician. He was the leader of the vocal group the Mamas & the Papas and remains frequently referred to as Papa John Phillips.
Storia. Il gruppo venne fondato nel settembre 1965 da John Phillips e sua moglie Michelle Gilliam [3], al quale poi si unirono Denny Doherty e Cass Elliot appartenenti ad un altro gruppo folk americano, i Mugwumps. Il gruppo ottenne un contratto con l'etichetta Dunhill di Lou Adler e cominciò a esibirsi dal vivo.

The Mamas & the Papas was a folk-rock vocal-group which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. Formed in New York City, the group consisted of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips, and Canadian Denny Doherty.

He had been in the hospital for weeks after falling off a stool and injuring his shoulder, according to Deseret News . He was in pain that was later attributed to a stomach infection that also caused his kidneys to fail.
