July 18, 2019 would have marked Carl Fontana’s 91 st birthday. Fontana remains one the most influential, prolific, and recorded trombonists of all time. His legacy lives through his countless recordings with greats such as Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Paul Anka, Tony Bennett, and Sammy Davis Jr.
Carl Fontana (1928–2003) Trombonist Fontana was born in Monroe, Louisiana, and was known for faultless technique and challenging creativity. He came to prominence in Woody Herman’s band (1952–3). Following work with Lionel Hampton and Hal McIntyre he joined Stan Kenton, where his solo on ‘Intermission Riff’ caused a sensation.
