Vassar Carlton Clements (April 25, 1928 [1] – August 16, 2005 [2]) was an American jazz, swing, and bluegrass fiddler. Clements has been dubbed the Father of Hillbilly Jazz, an improvisational style that blends and borrows from swing, hot jazz, and bluegrass along with roots also in country and other musical traditions. Husband of Millie Clements. Noted for his bluesy improvisations. Toured and recorded with three of the most influential early bands: Bill Monroe, Jim and Jesse, and Jimmy Martin. Leading figure in the New Grass movement, with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Hartford, Earl Scruggs, and his own Vassar Clements Band.
He is the quintessential American musician, being well versed in bluegrass, country, rock, blues, jazz and swing. His career presents a model that most musicians would gladly follow. Vassar Clements died of lung cancer on August 16, 2005 at the age of 77. He is missed so much by so many.

Biography. Vassar Clements was an innovative fiddler who logged time with several of the most influential early bluegrass masters and later enjoyed fame for his work with a number of progressive headliners. He is also credited with shaping a genre of music that came to be known as “hillbilly jazz.”
