The Early Years. The story begins in Key West, Florida where Theodore "Fats" Navarro, Jr. was born on September 24, 1923. It is said that he was of mixed Cuban-Black-Chinese parentage, but the details are unclear. His father was Theodore Navarro, Sr., a barber by trade, so to avoid confusion the son was known as "Cody" by the family.
