Best known as an actor, with many stage and screen credits, (NZ Onscreenhas an excellent profile that details his acting achievements) Des was also a teacher, photographer and writer, and a significant contributor to the creation of PhotoForum and PhotoForum/Wellington.

Not so: he was born in Zimbabwe, and already had a varied career behind him when he joined the Royal Ballet.
