Bravery during World War I earned him his nickname; friendship and mutual admiration led to Duke Ellington's "Portrait of The Lion" and Smith's own "Portrait of Duke."

4 dic 2012 · At the age of 19 Smith enlisted in the US Army in 1916. The following year he was sent to the front lines in France during World War I. His bravery in battle won him the nickname “the Lion.” Soon after Smith returned from France in 1919, he became one of the most influential piano players in New York.
