Johnson is best known in jazz as the Father of Harlem Stride Piano, the two handed orchestral jazz piano style that he pioneered. His recording of the stride anthem “Carolina Shout” was recorded in 1921 and is acknowledged as the first jazz piano solo on record.

Composer and pianist James Price Johnson, the father of stride piano, was born on February 1, 1891 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He attended New York public schools and received private piano study. His professional debut as a pianist came in 1904.
