John Francis Shelley (September 3, 1905 – September 1, 1974) was a U.S. politician. He served as the 35th mayor of San Francisco, from 1964 to 1968, the first Democrat elected to the office in 50 years, and the first in an unbroken line of Democratic mayors that lasts to the present (as of 2024 ).
John Francis Shelley (3 September 1905-1 September 1974) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-CA 5) from 8 November 1949 to 7 January 1964 (succeeding Richard J. Welch and preceding Philip Burton) and Mayor of San Francisco from 8 January 1964 to 8 January 1968 (succeeding George Christopher and preceding Joseph Alioto).
John Shelley died Sept. 1, 1974, in San Francisco at the age of 68, after a dedicated career fighting for the economic welfare and personal freedoms of individuals and the betterment of San Francisco. Upon hearing of Shelley’s passing, Mayor Alioto called him “a champion of the working people all his life.”
