Seán MacBride (26 January 1904 – 15 January 1988) was an Irish Clann na Poblachta politician who served as Minister for External Affairs from 1948 to 1951, Leader of Clann na Poblachta from 1946 to 1965 and Chief of Staff of the IRA from 1936 to 1937.
Seán MacBride was a human rights activist and a former IRA member who helped found Amnesty International. He also served as UN Commissioner for Namibia and played a role in the Council of Europe and the European Convention on Human Rights.
Seán MacBride was born on January 26, 1904 in Paris. He took an active part in the movement for Irish independence and suffered imprisonment on several occasions. 1947-1958. Member of Dail Eireann (Irish Parliament). 1948-1951. Minister for External Affairs for Ireland in Inter-Party Government.
The Nobel Peace Prize 1974 was divided equally between Seán MacBride "for his efforts to secure and develop human rights throughout the world" and Eisaku Satō "for his contribution to stabilize conditions in the Pacific rim area and for signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty"
He was the co-founder of Amnesty International (1961), a non-governmental organisation opposing violations of human rights, which was granted the Nobel Peace Prize (1977) and the United Nations Human Rights Prize (1978) for services to peace.
