  4. But he was not a successful Prime Minister. He was indecisive and unable to mediate between the formidable personalities in his Cabinet. After a letter pleading ill health, he was dismissed by George IV in January 1828, recovering virtually instantaneously. Goderich was born Frederick John Robinson in 1782.

  5. A better candidate for this dubious honour might have been Viscount Goderich, who lasted a mere four months in 1827–8. He had the added handicap of relative anonymity. For most of his long life he was known either as Frederick Robinson or the Earl of Ripon.
