Biografia. Era il terzo figlio di Thomas Grey, I marchese di Dorset (c. 1456–1501), a quel tempo l'unico marchese nel regno, e di Cecily Bonville. Sua madre era figlia e unica erede di William Bonville, VI barone Harington di Aldingham e la più ricca ereditiera d'Inghilterra.
Biografia. Era figlio di John Grey di Groby e di Elisabetta Woodville. Nacque a Groby Old Hall nel villaggio di Groby, nel Leicestershire, intorno al 1455 . Nel 1461 rimase orfano del padre e sua madre si risposò con Edoardo IV d'Inghilterra.

Marchese di Dorset fu un titolo nobiliare creato tre volte nella storia del Regno d'Inghilterra. La prima creazione avvenne nel 1397 per John Beaufort il quale perse il titolo due anni dopo. La seconda creazione avvenne nel 1442 per Edmund Beaufort, poi divenuto anche duca di Somerset nel 1448.
